I had a good read thru your blog today and enjoyed it quite a bit. As an American also here in Japan, but in the inaka, I like seeing the contrasts of where you live to where I live - I'd love to be able to buy an English language newspaper at a store or train station, but I'd have to go to Hiroshima or even Osaka or Kobe for that opportunity.
BTW - I heard about your blog from the "Learn Japanese with Beb and Alex" podcast.
