Ping pong pearls

Betty and I found these fish outside a yakitori place down a tiny alley (not, I should add, the one that serves goldfish sours). They were in a big pottery bowl with a sheet of glass over the top. The owner of the restaurant, in a tall chef's hat, came out to see why we were hovering near his doorway. He seemed excited that we had stopped to admire the odd fish. He stuck his head into the restaurant next door and reported back that the fat little guys are called ping pong pearls. (The truthbox says they're "ping pong pearlscale goldfish," but I like his better.)
He agreed with Betty that they look uncannily like underwater birds.

Thanks for sharing about these amazing fish and for posting a photo! I've never seen them before... and now I'm on a mission to find some :)

Much love,

Those goldfish are awfully cute. The last goldfish I had lived about 13 years until the raccoons finally got to him. They managed to get through all my wire netting somehow. It was truly a sad day!

Thanks for stopping by, Mrs. Albrecht! I hope you'll find other stuff here you like. There was a bubbling filter in the bowl, too. They seemed to be beloved and well cared for!

Dekooning, that is a sad story! Is 13 a pretty good run for a goldfish? I had no idea they could live so long.

If I remember correctly, he was about 4 inches long at 13 years. Not huge, but for a 30 cent goldfish we were quite proud of him. According to http://www.tropicalfishdata.com/goldfish/goldfish_lifespan.html :
"Like the maximum size, the lifespan of goldfish is also variable. The record is 43 years, but it is uncommon for goldfish to live this long. Goldfish usually live quite long when kept in large aquaria or outdoor ponds, up to 15 to 20 years is not unheard of. In smaller or heated aquaria, a lifespan of five to ten years is quite achievable."
