I've seen plenty of people doing that over the years. They really should do it at the gym instead.
In fact, I saw a guy doing that just yesterday, but this time I suspect he might have been unconciously copying this ad...

@adamu Do you think the ads are causing a whole wave of people to do this? They do make it look kind of fun...
Look at how everyone is marveling at the gymnast! I would never have thought to do this...thanks for the idea now I'll try it next time I ride the train! LOL
You know, I never saw anyone sitting on the floor in the subway until after the sign went up telling people not to. I wonder if these things really are backfiring? Isn't there some sociology student out there who needs a project?
