Free lard chunks

In the meat section, for greasing up your skillet. Do we have that?

Interesting that cubes of fat are free, but plastic bags at this Coop are 5 yen each. Not contradictory or anything, just interesting. I guess people have more motivation to take a pile of extra bags than to take more than they need of this stuff.

ewwww. I know you can buy tubs of lard in NZ, but I've never noticed the freebies here. gross!

It is kind of gross, isn't it? Though I guess it's pretty useful if you need just enough to fry up one night's worth of meat. What happens to it otherwise?

Hi! I'm currently living in Okinawa, and found this picture at the ramen place across the street. The Japanese BF says that he's seen the beef lard from time to time.

Also, beni-imo is delicious! I knew it was an Okinawa thing, but I didn't know you couldn't take it out. Next time you come down, try the ice cream!

Thanks, Amy. A friend mentioned on Twitter that some shops used to do that. Interesting that they still do! Free pork fat. Mmmm.

Sorry folks but this is BEEF FAT (Suet) and I just picked some up at my store in Tokyo the other day and used it last night to make Sukiyaki. It is still used by the British to make Suet Puddings and by the Americans to feed to birds in the winter.
